Behind, Inside a Star
Some autumn night
When you cannot sleep
Reach out your window
And knock on a star
If it opens
(Which it might)
You may well see anything
An irate fairy you woke up
A strangely empty silver cup
A flower made of sealing wax
The brush your sister never packs
A penguin on a golden throne
A dragon you could call your own
A bowl of lumpy, cold oatmeal
Half a curly apple-peel
A science project gone awry
A game you may not ever try
The sock you lost a week ago
Someone saying “Told you so!”
A mountain with a cap of cloud
The cat that never once “meowed”
A book without a single word
The wrong song with the perfect bird
You could find anything at all
But then again, you might see
Nothing.
