For me, a real-life epic is an event either so huge (like WWII huge) or so powerful (like Christ's resurrection) or both (like, the spread of Christianity during the first century) that you can't help being affected, impacted, or changed by it. A fictional epic tells the story of an epic event. And most of the time, it's a story you can't help being impacted by. I'm looking forward to seeing your upcoming post on the subject!
Well, assuming you already have the "literary" defination, I would say an epic is a story so vast in scope it affects an entire nation or world. Most of the time it has multiple protagonists and several plot strands that combine. If it's an epic, the people in that world should be aware of it.
